Navratri 6th Day: Maa Katyayani, Know the Worship Method and Mantra

During Navratri, 9 forms of Maa Durga are worshipped. Among these, Devi Katyayani is the sixth form. There is a tradition of worshipping Maa Katyayani on the sixth day of Navratri. By worshipping Maa Katyayani on this day, one gets a worthy child. Also, the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled and they get happiness and good fortune.

This year, in Chaitra Navratri 2024, the worship of Maa Katyayani will take place on April 14, 2024.

Maa Katyayani is the sixth form of Maa Durga who is worshipped on the sixth day of navratri. Known as the Adi ParaShakti or Mahadevi, as she is the fierce form of Maa Durga. 

As per the Skanda Purana, she was created by the anger of Gods. She killed the demon Mahishasura, due to which she got the name of Mahishasurmardini. She is one of the most violent forms of incarnations of Maa Durga. She removes evil spirits and provides blessings to her devotees who worship her with whole heart.  Being the daughter of Katyayana, she was given the name Katyayani.

Maa Katyayani Puja Vidhi

• On April 14, 2024, on Chhath day, after taking bath in the morning, meditate on Mata Katyayani.
• After cleaning the place where you have done Ghatasthapana, place the idol or photo of Mata Katyayani on a red or yellow cloth.
• Now apply Tilak to Maa Katyayani with Kumkum and Akshat.
• Worship Goddess Katyayani properly by offering incense to Goddess Katyayani.
• Mother Katyayani likes white colour very much, hence offering white flowers and offerings to her.
• Before concluding the puja, recite the worship mantras of Mata Katyayani.
• After that you should recite Durga Saptshati and Aarti of Mata Katyayani.

To please Goddess Katyayani, there is a tradition of offering honey on the sixth day of Navratri. Doing this brings sweetness and happiness and prosperity in life. You can also offer pumpkin pudding made in honey.

Maa Katyayani Story

According to the legend, once Maharishi Katyayan performed a rigorous penance for Mother Bhagwati to have a child. Maa Bhagwati was pleased with the rigorous penance of Maharishi Katyayan and gave her physical darshan. Sage Katyayan expressed his wish to his mother, on this Mother Bhagwati promised him that she would be born in his house as his daughter.

Once upon a time, the atrocities of a demon named Mahishasura were increasing on all the three worlds. Due to this all the gods and goddesses got sad.

Then from the glory of the Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh i.e. Lord Shiva, a goddess was born in the house of Maharishi Katyayana. She was named Katyayani because she was born in the house of Maharishi Katyayana. After being born as a daughter in the house of Mata Rani, Rishi Katyayan worshipped Maa Katyayani as per the rituals on Saptami, Ashtami and Navami Tithi.

After this, Mother Katyayani killed Mahishasura on Dashami day and freed all three worlds from his atrocities.
