Bhagiratha wanted to be free from this, so he performed rigorous penance to Lord Brahma and Lord Brahma assured him that Ganga would come to earth, purify the souls of his ancestors.
But he knew that the flow of Goddess Ganga can destroy everything, so Brahma ji asked Bhagiratha to worship Lord Shiva because only he can control the flow of Ganga. So he pleased Lord Shiva with his rigorous penance and on this auspicious day Maa Ganga descended on earth, hence Maa Ganga is also known as Bhagirathi.
