In Calendar, each Tithi ( Date duration ) is calculated by the difference of 12 degrees between Sun and Moon. The time taken by the Moon to travel 12 degrees around the sun is called a “Tithi”. Sometimes, the Moon takes more than 24 hours to move 12 degrees, sometimes it takes less. This variation either shortens or extends a Tithi.

Birth anniversary of Lord Parshuram 

It is believed that Lord Parshuram was born on this day. Lord Parshuram is considered to be the 6th Avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu. He was born as the son of Maharishi Jamadagni rishi and Renuka in a Brahmin family of Janapav mountain of village Manpur in indore district of Madhya Pradesh. 

Lord Parshuram destroyed the evil tyrannical Kshatriyas from the earth 21 times. He also taught war skills to the Kshatriyas. Lord Parshuram is among the 7 Chiranjeevis. According to Mahabharata and Vishnupuran, Lord Parshuram’s original name was Ram, but when Lord Shiva gave him his weapon named Parshu, his name became Parashuram.

One should chant Lord Parshuram’s Mantras on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. 

• Om jamadagnyaya vidmahe mahaviraya dhimahi tanno parashuramah prachodayat.

Holy Ganges descended on Earth 

Ganga came to earth on the day of Akshaya Tritiya. The arrival of Ganga, who resides in the Devlok (World of Gods), proved boon for everyone. Taking a bath in Ganga on this day has special significance.

Pleased with the penance of King Bhagiratha, Lord Shiva came to earth as a result, tying Goddess Ganga in his hair. All these incidents today become even more sacred.

Birth of Goddess Annapurna

Goddess Annapurna is the Avatar (incarnation) of Goddess Parvati. Goddess Annapurna was born on this day. Annapurna is considered the goddess of prosperity and abundance. This Goddess nourishes and grants food to all living beings. Goddess Annapurna is worshipped on this day, so that the food stores in the house always remain full. Akshaya Patra was such a vessel that the food in the Akshaya Patra, which was given to Draupadi never finishes until everyone eats. 

It is mentioned in Mahabharata that when Draupadi was kidnapped, Shri Krishna saved her honour on the day of Akshaya Tritiya.

Sudama met Lord Shri Krishna on Akshaya Tritiya

There is a story that connects Lord Krishna with Akshaya Tritiya. Sudama was the childhood friend of Lord Krishna. Troubled by his poverty, Sudama went to the kingdom of Lord Shri Krishna.

Being embarrassed, Sudama could not say anything to Lord Krishna, but Shri Krishna understood what was going in Sudama’s mind. On reaching home, a miracle happened, Sudama saw that poverty had gone from his life and home. The day Sudama met Lord Krishna was also the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. Since then, it is believed that one can get inexhaustible wealth on this day.
