Legend of Sankashti Chaturthi (Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat Katha)

According to Puranic tales, the divine marriage of Lord Vishnu with Goddess Lakshmi was fixed. Preparations for the grand event were in full swing, and all deities were invited except Lord Ganesha.

As the auspicious hour approached, and the procession of deities started, Ganesha was nowhere to be seen. The gods wondered if an invitation had been extended to Ganesha. Vishnu explained that an invitation had been sent to Ganesha’s father, Lord Shiva. If Ganesha wished to come, he would have accompanied his father, and there was no need for a separate invitation.

Intrigued, the gods decided to make Ganesha’s absence a topic of discussion. They speculated whether Ganesha had intentionally avoided the event or if he simply chose not to attend. Someone suggested that Ganesha, travelling on a mouse, would naturally arrive late, trailing behind the procession. The idea was accepted, and preparations continued without much concern.

While they were discussing, someone suggested – if Lord Ganesha comes, we can make him a gatekeeper and let him sit, reminding him of his home.

Now that Lord Ganesha arrived there, and understanding the situation, he volunteered to take care of the house. Further, the wedding procession proceeded as planned, when suddenly Naradji noticed that Lord Ganesha was sitting at the door. He approached Lord Ganesha and inquired about the reason for his stay. Lord Ganesha explained that Lord Vishnu had disrespected him.

Upon hearing, Naradji suggested that you send your mouse army ahead; it will dig a path so that your vehicles can get through, and then you will be respectfully invited. Now Lord Ganesha quickly sent his mouse army ahead, and the army dug the ground. When the procession departed, the wheels of the chariots got stuck in the earth. Despite numerous attempts, the wheels wouldn’t come out. Everyone tried various methods, but the wheels didn’t budge; instead, they broke in different places. No one could figure out what to do now.

However, Narada, the divine sage, suggested a solution. He said, “You all have not done any good by disrespecting Lord Ganesha. If you bring him here and appease him, your work may be accomplished, and this obstacle can be resolved.” If Ganesha was indeed invited, he should be honoured by placing guards at the gates to escort him to the event. The gods agreed, and the plan was set in motion. Lord Shiva then sent his messenger Nandi to bring Lord Ganesha.

When Ganesha arrived, he was welcomed with due respect, and the guards ensured his smooth passage. With his divine intervention, the wheels were recovered and repaired. The wedding procession resumed its journey, and everything seemed to progress smoothly. Finally, the wedding procession continued, marking the successful resolution of the obstacles.

This legend emphasises the importance of honouring Lord Ganesha and seeking his blessings to overcome obstacles and ensure the success of endeavours. The vrat (fast) and puja on Sankashti Chaturthi are observed to seek Ganesha’s divine intervention and blessings for a smooth and obstacle-free life.
