Nirjala-Ekadashi-2024

As during the other fasts of Ekadashi, only eating food is prohibited. But in the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat, both food as well as water is not allowed to be consumed for around 24 hours. From the time of sunrise to the time of next day’s sunrise, devotees have to follow the same. A few devotees keep the Nirjala Ekadashi vrat from sunrise to sunset.

Getting up early in the morning and praying to Lord Vishnu is what devotees do in the start. Then the prasad of panchamrita from five things: ghee, curd, milk, honey, and sugar is made. The male devotees perform the achamana which is a ritual of purification. Devotees give melons, hand fans, and water filled pots to Brahmins. The next morning devotees donate things after bathing and this is how Nirjala Ekadashi vrat ends.

The word parana means ending the fast. The Parana of Ekadashi is done after the sunrise on another day when Ekadashi’s fast ends. Performing Parana during the Dwadashi tithi is considered. Devotees believe that it is an offence if parana is not done within Dwadashi.

It is never advised to do Parana during Hari Vasara. It is essential to let Hari Vasara get over before ending up fast. The time which is preferred to break the fast is the Pratahkal. Madhyahna is also the time where you should avoid breaking the fast. If by any chance you are not able to break the fast during Pratahkal, then perform it after Madhyahna.
