Ganga Dussehra, also known by the name of Jeth Ka Dussehra is much different from Ganga Jayanti. This day is the one on which Maa Ganga descended on the Earth. States like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttarakhand have their utmost importance for this festival. Special Shree Maa Ganga aarti, Maa Ganga Puja and prasad is distributed to those who come to river Ganga to take her blessings. 

Doing Dan Punya and giving charity to the needy ones is all what Ganga Dussehra celebration is. It is believed that bathing in river Ganga on the day of Ganga Dussehra removes the sins of devotees.

As per the hindu calendar, Maa Ganga Dussehra is celebrated at the time of Dashami Tithi which falls during the Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha month. This falls between the time period of May or June. In the present year, Ganga Dussehra is on 16th June 2024 which is on Sunday.

The festival of Ganga Dussehra falls a day before the Nirjala Ekadashi. It is also said that as per the calculation, Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi will fall on the same day.

We celebrate Ganga Dussehra as on this day, Maa Ganga came on earth to descend it. She was on the mission to free the souls of Bhagirath’s ancestors which were cursed. By purifying and bringing heaven to earth, she descended and brought up positivity with her. 

The river Ganga is a boon to Bhagirath, due to which she got the name of Bhagirathi. Bhagirath belongs to the Sagara dynasty. He prayed to Maa Ganga and asked her to descend on the earth and make it a better place. 

Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Haridwar are the places where Ganga Dussehra is celebrated the most in India. It comes from Gangotri which is located in the Himalayas. Maa Ganga river meets with her sister Maa Yamuna and Maa Saraswati in the city of Prayagraj. The meeting of these three rivers in Prayagraj makes it the most holy city. 

How is Ganga Dussehra Celebrated? (Ganga Dussehra Puja Vidhi)

Devotees celebrated the festival of Ganga Dussehra by visiting Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Haridwar. The most famous puja which people perform here for their ancestors is the Pitra Puja. priests here perform Maa Ganga Aarti. Doing deep daan with the use of desi ghee in Maa Ganga river brings positivity and prosperity in one’s life. 

After doing certain rituals, devotees distribute prasads made from milk to others. More than millions of people gather to celebrate Maa Ganga Dussehra. 

Ganga Dussehra Mantra (Maa Ganga Mantra) 

Let’s know certain Ganga Maa Mantra which will bring positivity as you recite them during the  Ganga Dussehra. 

After taking a dip in the river Ganga, one should recite this mantra:-

“Om Namah: Shivaya Narayanaya Dussehra Ayai Gangayai Namah”

After reciting this mantra, offer around five flowers and recite this mantra:- 

“Un Namo Bhagwate Hri Shree Hili Hili Mili Mili Gange Maa Pavay Pavay Swaha”

After performing all the rituals of Ganga Dussehra, recite this Ganga Gayatri Mantra:-

Om bhageerthyae ch vidhmhe vishnupatnyae ch dhimhi ! tanno ganga prachodayat !
