Significance of Bhai Dooj 2024

This auspicious day is very important to the Hindu community members. This day, known as Yama Dwitiya, is celebrated on the second day of Kartik month. This celebration comes just after Diwali and marks the end of the five-day-long celebrations of the Hindus’ major festival.

According to religious texts, sisters offer prayers to gods and apply tilak on their brothers’ foreheads on this day to bless them with health, happiness, and a long life. As a result, this day celebrates the connection between a sister and her brother. On this occasion, sisters give delicious desserts to their brothers and also fast. Those who participate in the ceremonies are considered fortunate and regarded as Saubhagyavati, while the brothers receive the blessing of a long life.

Yamraj, the God of death, is honoured on this day with Yama Doots and Chitragupta due to the historical significance and legends associated with this day.

History of Bhai Dooj

According to the religious texts, two Puranic figures are closely linked to the narrative of this celebration. Yama and Yamuna are the names of these characters. Yama, also known as Yamraj, is the deity of death. Overwhelmed by the demands of daily responsibilities, Yama neglected to see his sister for a long time.

Desiring to see his sister, Yama made a surprise visit to Yamuna on the Dwitiya Tithi. Filled with happiness by the arrival of her brother, Yamuna greeted him by applying a tilak on his forehead and draping a garland around his neck. On this fortunate day, Yama bestowed a favor upon his cherished sister. She asked her brother to save the lives of brothers on this day, and ever since, it has been commemorated as Yama Dwitiya. It is also believed that immersing oneself in the sacred waters of Yamuna on this day will bestow Yama’s blessings upon the worshippers.

On this special day, brothers pledge to always be there for their sisters, and sisters sincerely wish for their brother’s long life. No matter the customs and ceremonies, the focus of this day is on the love and closeness between siblings, which is what makes it significant for everyone.
