Raksha Bandhan 2024

There is nothing more beautiful than witnessing the ceremony of tying the Rakhi on a brotherly love. Siblings light a lamp (diya) symbolising the positivity of the event. In different regions of India, Raksha Bandhan is observed with local differences, contributing a special touch to the celebration.

In Gujarat and Maharashtra, sisters make a unique thali (plate) consisting of sweets, fruits, and other delicacies. The brother is seated on a chauki, which is a short wooden platform, as the sister carries out the Rakhi-tying ritual.

Siblings make Rakhis using vibrant threads and cowrie shells. In specific regions of South India, siblings tie a thread known as “Raksha” or “Bali” on their sisters’ wrists, signifying a mutual pledge of safeguarding.

An event suitable for individuals of various age groups. Raksha Bandhan goes beyond different age groups. It is a day when families gather, sharing stories, laughter, and a scrumptious meal. Older individuals reminisce about previous Rakhi festivities, as younger ones revel in the happiness of strengthening their sibling connection.

Raksha Bandhan 2024 Puja Vidhi

The puja vidhi, a sacred and beautiful ritual, is central to Raksha Bandhan celebration, enhancing the festivities with a spiritual element. The Raksha Bandhan ceremony starts with the careful arrangement of a pooja thali.

This plate, known as a thali, transforms into a canvas for blessings. The focal point is a lovely diya (oil lamp) containing oil and a cotton wick. Next to the diya, sisters place roli (vermilion powder) as a representation of good fortune and joy.

Nearby, a combination of rice grains and turmeric, known as Akshata, symbolises prosperity and good fortune. Candies, a delightful treat, represent the sweetness of the relationship between siblings. And lastly, the main attraction – the Rakhi, carefully selected or crafted with love, is ready to be worn on the brother’s wrist.

When the pooja starts, sisters light the diya, its soft flame representing love’s warmth and protection’s light. They show their love and devotion by performing an Aarti for their brothers. The brother watches as the thali is spun in a circular motion, with the diya’s flame creating a bright trail. This aarti represents the sister’s prayers and good intentions for her brother’s health, wealth, and joy.

After the aarti, sisters put a tilak on their brother’s forehead. The tilak, created using roli, symbolises good luck and safeguarding. While the sister softly places the tilak, it is a peaceful moment of bonding, a wordless assurance of her constant love and backing.

Importance of Raksha Bandhan

Although the tales and historical stories add depth to Raksha Bandhan, the festival’s true meaning goes beyond them. It’s a tribute to the strong connection that siblings share, a connection that goes beyond age, distance, and situation.

On this occasion, siblings fasten a Rakhi on their brothers’ wrists, representing love, care, and good intentions. Brothers must promise to protect their sisters and show them love and gratitude in exchange.

Raksha Bandhan also goes beyond biological siblings, promoting a wider concept of family and community. Cousins, friends, and mentors can also have Rakhis tied to them, further developing bonds of love and nurturing a feeling of encouragement.

As we near Raksha Bandhan 2024, we should welcome the essence of these myths and past events. Allow the festival to serve as a recognition of the strength found in love, protection, and unity.

Whether you’re marking the occasion with your natural siblings, adopted family, or neighbours, let Raksha Bandhan be a day to reinforce connections, express deep feelings, and make enduring memories.
