To resolve the dispute, a meeting of all the gods and goddesses was called. Lord Shiva and Vishnu agreed with the conclusion given by the assembly after much deliberation, but Lord Brahma was not satisfied.

He even tried to insult Lord Shiva due to which Lord Shiva became extremely angry. It was from this fierce form of Lord Shankar that Kal Bhairav was born. All the gods and goddesses present there started trembling after seeing this form of Shiva.

Kal Bhairav, who had incarnated riding on a black dog and holding a stick in his hands, attacked Lord Brahma and severed one of his heads. Brahma ji now had only four heads left and he saved himself from the wrath of Kaal Bhairav by asking for forgiveness.

After Lord Brahma apologised, Lord Shiva came back in his form, but Kaal Bhairav was accused of killing Brahma, due to which he wandered here and there for many years and reached Varanasi, where he got freedom from this sin. Lord Kaal Bhairav is also called Mahakaleshwar, Dandadhipati. Due to freedom from punishment in Varanasi, he is also called Dandapaani.

This was the information about the auspicious time of Kalashtami puja, puja method and its story.
