Pitru Paksha 2024: According to Hindu religion, the sixteen days from Bhadrapada Purnima to Sarvapitre Amavasya are dedicated to the ancestors. This is the scriptural period in which charity is done for the peace of the souls of the ancestors who have died. When Will Pitru Paksha 2024 Start? (Pitru Paksha 2024 Date and Time)
Pitru Paksha 2024 is starting on Bhadrapada Shukla Purnima i.e. 17 September 2024, Tuesday. Purnima Tithi will start from 11:44 am on 17 September 2024 and it will last till 8:04 am on 18 September 2024. Pitru Paksha (Shradh 2024) will end on 2 October, Wednesday, Sarvapitre Amavasya, it will last for sixteen days. According to the Puranas, the ancestors come to Earth to receive their tarpan on the day of their death.
During this period, you can perform the Shradh of your ancestors on their death date according to the Hindu calendar. If you do not remember the death date of your ancestors, then you should perform their Shradh on the day of Sarvapitr Amavasya. It is believed that on this day all the ancestors come to Earth to receive their share.

How to get the Blessings of Ancestors? (Pitru Paksha 2024 Puja Vidhi)
After knowing the dates of Shradh Paksha, now let us understand its importance. Shradh Karma has special significance in Sanatan culture. Shradh performed with devotion is especially fruitful. Pitrudev is pleased, which brings peace and prosperity in the house.
On the other hand, if we disregard the rules in Pitru Paksha or do not offer food and water to the ancestors, then they may get angry and you may have to suffer many kinds of troubles. Therefore, you should show respect to your ancestors with rituals.
Pitru Puja is performed in different ways at different places in India, according to tradition. If you are performing Pitru Puja for the first time in Shradh 2024, then you can follow the method given below –
- You can perform Shraddha for ancestors up to three generations.
- First of all, wake up in Brahmamuhurta, take a bath and wear clean clothes. White clothes are considered to be the best.
- Prepare food of your ancestor’s liking hygienically, such as kheer, puri, halwa and vegetable etc.
- Put the food in six parts in a clean place, which includes all the dishes.
- One part is Gau Bali, second part is Kak Bali (for crow), third part is Swan Bali (for dog), fourth part is Pipilika Bali (for ants), fifth part is for all the gods and sixth part is Chandal Bali.
- Keep water in a pot and invoke your ancestor by taking Kusha (Doob) and black sesame in your hand.
- Now take water in your hand and rotate it twice around the food. Feed the crow’s portion to the crow. Give the dog’s and ant’s portion to them. If none of these is available, then that portion can be given to the cow.
- Feed all the remaining portions to the cow. After that feed a Brahmin. Give them Dakshina and touch their feet and take blessings.
- If a Brahmin is not available, donate food to a needy person and then eat food yourself.

People who died due to accident, snakebite, poison, murder, suicide, their Shraddha should not be performed on their death date. Shraddha of such persons should be performed only on Chaturdashi Tithi, no matter on which day they died. The shraddha of married women who died during their husband’s lifetime should be performed on the Navami Tithi of Pitru Paksha, irrespective of the Tithi on which they died.
During the Puja, feed the beggar who comes to the door, and no guest should be insulted during this period, rather it is considered auspicious to respect the son-in-law or nephew in Pitru Paksha.
