Nag Panchmi 2024

Nag Panchami is a distinctive celebration where Hindus worship snakes as they are believed to be divine beings. This celebration is observed in India, Nepal, and various other nations. The festival happens on the fifth day of Shravana, celebrated in either July or August.

Places like Maharashtra and Karnataka have temples dedicated to snake gods. People visit these temples and pray with great devotion. Today, snake charmers who deal with real snakes play an important role. 

People give them milk and money. In Nag Panchami, the basic rule is that digging the earth is prohibited. Its purpose is to protect snakes that live underground. In West Bengal, people worship the snake goddess Devi Manasa along with Ashta Naag or eight snakes on that day.

In Gujarat, the celebration is called Annoy Pancham and it falls on some days some time recently, the Krishna Janmashtami, which is the birth day of Lord Krishna. Within the Gujarati calendar, Nag Panchami falls within the month of Shravan, rather like in other parts of India.

The main reason for Nag Panchami is to honour and worship Lord Vasuki, Lord Adishesha and Lord Ananta. People have fast on this day and eat only after Nag Puja, a special prayer to the snake deities. Here’s the exciting part! There’s a special time period to celebrate Nag Panchami this year. It’s between 6:18 AM and 8:52 AM, which is almost two and a half hours to celebrate! But guess what? The main ritual starts a little earlier! The special Panchami day, which is the fifth day of a special moon month, begins at 12:36 AM on August 9th. The whole Nag Panchami celebration goes on all the way until 3:14 AM on August 10th. So even though there’s a special time for some of the main activities, the entire festival lasts a bit longer.

Nag Panchmi Vrat And Puja Vidhi

No matter how it began, Nag Panchami is a special day all over India, but especially in some places. Here’s how people celebrate:

In Nepal, people put pictures of Nagas on their doors to keep bad things away. They even leave food like milk and honey in fields where they think snakes might live. 

Down south in India, Nag Panchami is a big deal, especially for sisters who want to show their love for their brothers. Early in the morning, they might take a bath and offer special prayers to anthills, which are like snake homes. They might even worship real cobras or statues of cobras. Milk is a super common offering, and sometimes they even share some of the milk with their brothers as a special gift.

Near Mumbai, there’s a place called Shirala where people carefully dig out snakes and feed them milk and even rats! Then, they carry the snakes to a temple for a special ceremony.

And guess what? Sometimes people even tie swings to trees for the ladies to play on during Nag Panchami!
