Hariyali Amavasya 2024

Hariyali Amavasya is a hindu religion festival which is celebrated during Amavasya time in the Sawan month. It is the Shravan month as per the hindu calendar. It is the month where the monsoon begins with greenery all around. 

During this time, women take rounds of the peepal trees and pray there. They offer prashad by cooking Malpua. There are various temples including Vrindavan and Mathura where special darshan is organised on this day.

Number of devotees visit the Dwarkadhish temple and Banke Bihari Temple to take blessings from Lord Krishna. Many Lord Shiva temples are also decorated for devotees to come and seek blessings from him. In Udaipur, a three day fair is organised.

Hariyali Amavasya date is on 5th of August this year. It is celebrated in the special form where we will see the 5 Maha Yogas. Sucha  combination is rare, and it happened about a century ago. The Shubh Yog i.e the auspicious time of Hariyali Amavasya time will remain till 12:11 PM. The Siddhi Yog will begin at 07:06 PM on 31st of July and will remain till 03:16 PM on 1st of August. 

The Amrita Siddhi Yog, along with the Sarvartha Siddhi Yog, and Guru Pushya Yog, all the three Yogs will begin at 06:18 AM on 1st of August and will remain till 12:11 PM on the first of August. Hariyali Amavasya has a new moon as it falls between July and August as per the English calendar. Same as other Amavasya, it has great religious values in Hindu culture.

Prayers of the devotees are focused on hoping for a successful monsoon season. It will lead to excellent agricultural production in the year. Lord Shiva Darshan is celebrated at Lord Shiva temples across the country.

• As per Hindu religion, there are certain activities that individuals perform on the festival of Hariyali Amavasya.

• As per the Hindu Purana, Hariyali Amavasya is essential, and people should do Pitru Tarpan, pind daan, and Daan Punya on this day.

• It is advisable to cleanse yourself in a sacred river and a sacred location.

• During Hariyali Amavasya, chant the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya”.

• During Sunrise, offer water to the sun and chant sun mantras.

• Observe the fast on the day of Hariyali Amavasya and perform Pitru Tarpan to pray and fast for the spirit of ancestors.

• Give the flour balls to feed the fish and other animals that live in ponds and rivers.

• Provide food and give Dakshina to the Brahmins on the holy day of Hariyali Amavasya.

• Provide Sugar and Flour to ants on the Peepal tree and other trees.

Significance of Hariyali Amavasya 

Other parts of India have the craze for this festival too, but the names are different. For example, it’s called ‘Gatari Amavasya’ in Maharashtra, ‘Chukkala Amavasya’ in Andhra Pradesh and ‘Chitalagi Amavasya’ in Orissa. Even though the ways people celebrate might be different depending on where you are, the overall feeling of the festival stays the same.

On Hariyali Amavasya, it’s a great time to show respect to our ancestors. Sawan Amavasya is particularly important for helping our ancestors in finding peace in the afterlife. We can do this through rituals like “pind daan.”
