When Adhik Maas or Malmaas comes, then their number increases to 26. Chaturmas is considered to start from this day. From this day, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu sleeps in Kshirsagar and then after about four months, when the Sun enters Libra, he is awakened. That day is called Devuthani Ekadashi. The gap in between is called Chaturmas.

Devotees believe that keeping fast on the day of Shayani Ekadahsi will bless them. It is also known by the name of Ashadi Ekadashi which is widely famous.

What is DevShayani Ekadashi 2024?

This Ekadashi is also known as the Ekadashi of good fortune. Padma Purana claims that fasting or observing fast on this day liberates one from sins committed intentionally or unintentionally. Worshipping on this day with full heart and rules leads to salvation for women. According to Brahma Vaivarta Purana, fasting on Devshayani Ekadashi fulfils all wishes. 

Various other names are also given to Shayani Ekadashi. They are Ashadhi Ekadashi (the full moon day), Tholi Ekadashi, Harishayani Ekadashi (time when Lord Vishnu sleeps), Maha Ekadashi (the big Ekadashi), and even many more are there. On this day, the sun also enters into the Gemini.
