Five parts of Panchang Today

1. Tithi

The Hindu calendar is based on the lunar month. It has two phases, Krishna and Shukla Paksha. It is of 15 days each. According to Vikram Samvat calculation, the time taken for the ‘moon line’ to go 12 degrees above the ‘sun line’ is called Tithi.

These 15 Tithi are Pratipada, Dwitiya, Tritiya, Chaturthi, Panchami, Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, Dashami, Ekadashi, Dwadashi, Trayodashi, Chaturdashi and Amavasya/Purnima respectively.

2. Nakshatra

A group of stars in the sky is called a Nakshatra. It has 27 Nakshatras and nine planets own these Nakshatras.

These 27 nakshatras are Ashwin Nakshatra, Bharani Nakshatra, Krittika Nakshatra, Rohini Nakshatra, Mrigasira Nakshatra, Ardra Nakshatra, Punarvasu Nakshatra, Pushya Nakshatra, Ashlesha Nakshatra, Magha Nakshatra, Poorvaphalguni Nakshatra, Uttaraphalguni Nakshatra, Hasta Nakshatra, Chitra Nakshatra, Swati Nakshatra, Vishaka Nakshatra, Anuradha Nakshatra, Jyeshtha Nakshatra, Moola Nakshatra, Poorvashada Nakshatra, Uttarashada Nakshatra, Shravan Nakshatra, Dhanishta Nakshatra, Shatabhisha Nakshatra, Poorvabhadrapad Nakshatra, Uttarabhadrapada Nakshatra and Revati Nakshatra.

3. Day

In Hindu calendar, day means day. There are 7 days in a week in both the English and Hindi calendar.

These 7 days are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday respectively.

4. Yoga

Like Nakshatra, the number of yogis is also 27. The positions of special distances between the Sun and the Moon are called Yoga.

These 27 Yogas are respectively Vishkumbh, Preeti, Ayushman, Saubhagya, Shobhan, Atigand, Sukarma, Dhriti, Shool, Gand, Vriddhi, Dhruva, Vyaghat, Harshan, Vajra, Siddhi, Vyatipat, Variyan, Parigha, Shiva, Siddha, Sadhya, Shubh, Shukla, Brahma, Indra and Vaidhriti.

5. Karan

According to the Hindu calendar, there are two Karanas in a Tithi. One in the first half of the Tithi and one in the second half of the Tithi, there are a total of 11 Karanas.

These 11 Karanas are respectively Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitil, Gar, Vanij, Vishti, Shakuni, Chatushpad, Nag and Kistughna.
