History and Story Behind Markandey Mahadev Temple

Markandey was fated to live for only 16 years. After finding out about the situation, his parents were extremely worried; however, they were committed to taking all required actions to protect their son.

Markandey was brought to the banks of the Ganges River, where a sand lingam was constructed for him, and he was worshipped continuously. Markandey started praying with his parents and got so engrossed in his devotion that he ignored the fact that he was about to die.

At the age of 16, Markandey had his soul taken by the god of death, Yamaraj. Markandeya was so immersed in his worship that he failed to notice Yamaraj’s being there. Yamaraj attempted to capture Markandey’s soul aggressively, however, Markandeya held onto the lingam firmly.

Instantly, the lingam shattered, and Lord Shiva materialised. Shiva got angry at Yama for attempting to take Markandey’s soul, so he compelled Yama to depart. Shiva told Markandey, “Your dedication pleases me. “I will fulfil one wish for you.”

Markandey requested eternal life, and Shiva fulfilled his desire. Markandeya lived a long life, evolving into a revered sage and educator. There is also a belief that he created the potent Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, a sacred prayer that offers defence against death.

Markandey’s tale demonstrates that unwavering faith in God has the ability to conquer even the strongest curses. It serves as a reminder that God is constantly present to shield his followers, even from the ruler of death.

Markandey Mahadev has been revered on the temple wall of Lord Shankar ever since. People have faith in offering belpatra along with a pot of water in the name of Lord Rama at this spot.
