What is Pradosh Vrat? Significance, Legend- Everything you need to know
Pradosh Vrat: The term ‘Pradosh’ means twilight. That is why the vrat is celebrated between night and day, also known as sandhyakal. Although major regions of the country celebrate Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati on this day, some regions of India worship Bhagwan Shiva’s Natraj avatar.
Now, let us know in blog about Pradosh Vrat, its Significance and much more.
Legend of Pradosh Vrat
According to Vedic texts, Pradosh Vrat is observed because of a legend going around since the time of Samudra Manthan. The legend goes that when halahal or poison emerged from the ocean, Bhagwan Shiva consumed it to save the Universe from destruction. However, Mata parvati intervened and stopped the effects of poison from spreading.
After the completion of Samudra Manthan, all the devtas were so elated that they forgot to thank Bhagwan Shiva for his sacrifice. It was on the thirteenth day that the devtas realised their mistake. Bhagwan Shiva forgave all of them with all his heart. This act of forgiveness is celebrated as Pradosh, symbolizing the blessings and salvation bestowed upon devotees who observe this vrat with sincerity.
Another legend states that on Trayodashi tithi, Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati are particularly benevolent, granting blessings to devotees who worship them during dusk and observe the fast with dedication.
Ways to do Puja
According to the Skanda Purana, Pradosham is observed in two ways.
The first method follows a strict day-long fast spanning 24 hours, with devotees staying awake during the night.
The second method involves fasting from sunrise to sunset, followed by evening worship of Lord Shiva and breaking the fast thereafter.
- Sit on an asan
- Perform abhishek of Bhagwan Shiva with milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar
- Perform abhishek with Gangajal
- Offer Kumkum, Akshat and flowers
- Offer Bhang, Datura, Bel patra and fruits of Bel patra to Bhagwan Shiva
- Read Shiv stotra paath
- Perform shankar aarti
After the initial abhishek, Bhagwan Shiva is worshipped, and his energy is invoked in a sacred Kalash, placed on darbha grass adorned with lotus symbols and filled with water.
After completing the rituals, devotees listen to Pradosh Vrat katha and chant the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra 108 times. Following this, they partake of water from the Kalash, apply ash tilak on their foreheads, and visit Lord Shiva temples. Lighting diyas during this time is believed to enhance the benefits of Pradosh Vrat.
Alongside chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, devotees may recite other potent mantras associated with Bhagwan Shiva, such as the Rudra Gayatri Mantra or the Shiva Panchakshari Mantra. These mantras helps in getting Bhagwan Shiva’s blessings, removing negativity, and fostering spiritual growth.
